Tourist tax and guest registration in Denmark A complete guide
Denmark, with its progressive culture, Viking heritage, and charming cities, is a favorite destination for travelers seeking both tradition and modernity. In this guide, we break down the current rules and regulations on tourist taxes and guest registration to keep you informed when visiting Denmark.

Is there a tax on tourism in Denmark?
No, Denmark currently doesn’t have a tourist tax. While many countries have introduced this charge (often called a lodging tax), Denmark remains tourist-tax-free for now. However, discussions are underway in cities like Copenhagen about introducing one in the future. We’ll keep you updated if anything changes.
For hosts
Guest registration in Denmark
If you’re providing accommodations in Denmark, guest registration is a legal requirement. This applies to both Danish citizens and foreign visitors, with different rules for each.

Guest registration of Danish citizens
For Danish guests, accommodation providers must (by law) record the following:
• Their full name;
• Date of birth, and;
• Place of residence.
Guests will also need to show ID, such as a driver’s license or passport, to confirm their identity at check-in.
Guest registration of foreign tourists
For international visitors, there are a few more details that need to be logged, as determined by law in 2022, next to the abovementioned details:
• Nationality;
• Arrival and departure dates, and;
• Passport type and document numbers.
Just like with Danish guests, identification is required at check-in.
Guest registration of children in Denmark
Children staying in groups, like on family trips or school tours, don’t need to fill out their own registration cards. The group leader can handle this for the entire group, making it easier for everyone.
Storing of Guest Registration in Denmark
As a host, you’re required to store guest registration data for two years. After that, it must be securely deleted, ensuring compliance with privacy laws.
Constant monitoring of developments in Denmark
Although there is no form of tourist tax in Denmark, we are closely monitoring all developments that can lead to a new tax to be introduced. In Copenhagen, for instance, there are serious discussions about introducing a tourist tax, just like other larger European cities.
