Tourist tax rate Conwy

Conwy County runs from the north Wales coast inland to the eastern edge of Eryri. Llandudno is its centre of gravity, a Victorian resort with the longest pier in Wales and the Great Orme. Conwy town has a UNESCO-listed castle and complete medieval walls, and the coast at Towyn and Kinmel Bay holds large static caravan parks. Inland, Betws-y-Coed serves walkers heading into the mountains.

Is Conwy introducing a tourist tax?

Not yet, and it is not decided. Conwy County Borough Council approved a consultation on 14 May 2026, and has been explicit that the question was whether to consult in Conwy County — not whether to introduce a levy. The consultation ran from 20 May to 17 July 2026. Conwy's decision runs through two stages: the findings go first to the Economy and Place Overview and Scrutiny Committee in early September 2026, which makes recommendations but does not decide, and then to Full Council in late September 2026 for the final decision.

If Conwy approves the levy, it must give the Welsh Revenue Authority 12 months' notice, and a levy can only begin on 1 April or 1 October — so the earliest possible start date is 1 October 2027. The rates would be the national ones: £1.30 per person per night for hotels, cottages, statics, touring pitches and glamping, and £0.75 for tent pitches and shared dormitory rooms, where under-18s are exempt. That split matters in Conwy: the large static caravan parks at Towyn, Kinmel Bay and Abergele sit in the £1.30 band, while only tent pitches and the hostels and bunkhouses around Betws-y-Coed and Capel Curig reach the lower rate.

Whatever Conwy decides, registering your accommodation with the WRA becomes mandatory across Wales, opening in October 2026 and closing in spring 2027.

Trippz: the authority on tourist tax

Tourist tax is set locally and rates change without warning. Trippz tracks every change and keeps the data current, which is why travel platforms and property software, including Airbnb, Booking.com and Expedia, rely on Trippz to calculate tourist tax and register guests in every market they serve.

Trippz: the authority on tourist tax

How Trippz stays current

Trippz checks tax rules jurisdiction by jurisdiction against official municipal and national sources. When a rate or rule changes, the update happens automatically rather than on a periodic review cycle. This is the same monitoring that travel platforms and software vendors depend on to stay accurate everywhere they operate.
