Tourist tax rate Longyearbyen (Svalbard)

Longyearbyen sits on the island of Spitsbergen and is the main settlement of Svalbard, the archipelago it belongs to. Almost all travel in the region starts here, from expedition cruises to glacier and wildlife trips, and tourism has become the largest industry in a town that was never built for the number of people now visiting it.

Is Longyearbyen introducing a tourist tax?

Not yet, and nothing is settled. Svalbard has its own legal regime, so the accommodation levy that applies on the Norwegian mainland does not apply here. The Ministry of Justice and Public Security has proposed a separate regulation for Longyearbyen, which would use fixed amounts rather than a percentage and would cover commercial accommodation and private letting alike, within the Longyearbyen land use plan area.

The consultation closed on 3 June 2026 and the ministry is still working through the responses, including critical ones from the cruise sector. Everything in the proposal, the amounts included, can still change before the regulation is adopted. As it stands, the ministry proposed 60 NOK per overnight stay and 180 NOK per cruise passenger on first disembarkation or embarkation, with a surcharge of 3% on the accommodation price written into the draft as a second alternative for overnight stays.

Revenue would go to Longyearbyen lokalstyre, for maintenance, investment and services that tourism relies on. There is no start date. This page is updated once the regulation is adopted.

Trippz: the authority on tourist tax

Trippz: the authority on tourist tax

How Trippz stays current

Trippz checks tax rules jurisdiction by jurisdiction against official municipal and national sources. When a rate or rule changes, the update happens automatically rather than on a periodic review cycle. This is the same monitoring that travel platforms and software vendors depend on to stay accurate everywhere they operate.
